Cluj International Committee differs from a traditional chamber of commerce in both focus and function. While a traditional chamber of commerce is often a bilateral institution that represents a specific country or business constituency, this model may be more effective in larger capital cities where membership-driven structures are more established, and fees are focused on events; however, it might be is less suited to the broader, cross-border needs of a city like Cluj-Napoca.
Business growth depends on reach and access, enabling large, small, and medium-sized businesses, microbusinesses, as well as start-ups to participate equally in international trade and collaboration. Cluj International Committee includes a number of honorary consuls on its founders’ board, including Wouter Reijers from the Netherlands, Carl Widell from Sweden, and Shajjad Rizvi MBE from the United Kingdom. It also works closely with the Cluj Consular Corps, one of the largest organizations of its kind in Europe. However, Cluj International Committee remains distinct: it is not bound by national policy or political positions, and it operates independently of the constraints that country-specific business or political priorities can impose. This independence allows Cluj International Committee to work with the diplomatic business community in support of broader business prosperity and international trade, without being limited by any one nation’s policy position.
Cluj International Committee is independent of both offices while maintaining strong working relationships and partnerships with each. Cluj’s success is closely linked to its openness to international values, and Cluj International Committee values its constructive relationship with the Cluj Mayor’s Office, which has consistently supported pro-business and international engagement. Cluj International Committee’s flagship event, Meet the Mayor, takes place annually as an open question-and-answer session with Mayor Emil Boc. To date, Cluj remains the only major city in Romania to host this type of event.
